Case Study: Planning For Capex and Maintenance Costs

A large utility provider in Australia serves more than 85,000 customers spread over a vast 1.3-million square kilometer area. The company needs to plan for and analyze maintenance costs of its equipment and other assets over three years and the capital expenditures required in the same period.

Technology provider Tridant  designed a solution around Cognos TM1, which synchronized data and metadata with the utility's asset management system on a daily basis. The solution also drew from other source systems, including Oracle Financials.

Cognos TM1 is now enabling the utility to compile the capex budget and maintenance plan in real time across thousands of assets and tens of thousands of project activities. Because it is built on in-memory technology, users are able to spread costs over future periods with just a few clicks and update drivers and assumptions in real-time.

It is no longer necessary to extract data out of the asset management system into spreadsheets. The Cognos TM1 solution has automated the consolidation of plans, reduced cycle times, provides powerful analytics and reporting, and allows greater visibility into unforeseen costs.
