2012, May 23 Olympus executives Hideo Yamada and Hisashi Mori were allegedly able to hide their misdeeds for more than a decade as they oversaw the company's whistleblowing hotline.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Olympus' hotline office was designed to handle calls, letters and emails from employees reporting possible violations of law or the company's code of conduct.
The compliance hotline was implemented in 2005, following the enactment of the whistleblower protection law in 2004.
The whistleblowing structure, however, was significantly disabled as the Japanese camera maker had a culture that prevented employees from speaking freely.
The Journal says that whistleblowing employees are mistreated after filing complaint with the company's compliance hotline.
Citing an Olympus spokesman, the Journal says the company is reviewing its corporate-compliance systems, including whistleblowing, and "is considering various steps to make any necessary changes."
