Some Malaysian companies are banning employees from visiting social networking sites during office hours as it is costing them millions of ringgit annually in lost productivity, according to a report on the Straits Times.
Ham Hon Kit, managing director of fashion retailer Voir Holdings Bhd, says his company recently banned employees from going online because the company might risk losing up to RM2.4 million (US$787,000) a year if employees spent two work hours a day using office computers to access Facebook and other networking sites.
Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Shamsuddin Bardan is urging employers to ban their workers from visiting social networking sites during office hours.
According to British employment website MyJobGroup.co.uk, company staff who spent an hour daily on social networking sites during work cost British businesses 14 billion pounds (US$21 billion) a year.
