To protect India’s local industry, the country’s heavy industries minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, has asked the finance ministry to impose taxes on imports of cheap Chinese power equipment, reports The Wall Street Journal.
"We don't want India to be turned into a dumping ground," Deshmukh states at a press briefing the Journal attended. The newspaper says that Deshmukh didn't say how much tax his ministry has sought. However, the Journal notes that power ministry is unlikely to support Deshmukh's demand, with equipment shortages hurting the country's electricity projects.
According to the Journal, the comments come close on the heels of a verbal battle between the two Asian neighbors over a border dispute.
Citing quality concerns, India has banned imports of toys, milk and milk products and chocolate and chocolate products in the past year from China, leading to protests from its neighbor, says the Journal.
