The chief executive and registrar of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Winnie C.W. Cheung, will retire from her post in June 2012 after leading the city's only statutory accounting body since 2004, the institute announced.

 

During Cheung's tenure as chief executive, the Institute's membership grew from slightly more than 20,000 in 2004 to well over 30,000 2011. The number of registered students in the Institute's qualification programme went from less than 5,000 in 2004 to more than 15,000 this year.

 

Cheung joined the Institute in 1990 and held increasingly senior roles. During her tenure as chief executive, she has achieved major accomplishments that include rebranding the Institute from the Hong Hong Society of Accountants in 2004, reengineering the committee and management structures, developing the Institute's fifth long range plan 2007-2011 and relocating to new and larger headquarters to accomomdate staff growth. The new offices also provide a venue for the expansion of membership activities and training.
