Garment workshop operators in China's Zhili town in Zhejiang province fear that a tax to be revived by the local government will cripple their operations, reports the South China Morning Post.
Zhili town is known as the country's hub for children's clothes. It is also where massive riots broke out in late October when the government announced plans to double the tax on each factory sewing machine to more than 600 yuan, notes the newspaper.
Although the government plans to resume taxation at the earlier level, local businessmen said it would be a heavy burden to an industry already reeling from the riots, says the post.
Zhili boasts about 20 billion yuan in annual turnover from the manufacture of children's clothing.
