This ACCA survey of more than 450 senior finance executives across the world finds that companies have shifted their priorities from maximising profits to managing cash flow, working capital and liquidity. This shift has put the spotlight on the CFO, who is now perceived to be more valuable within the organisation. At the same time, the CFO has arguably never been stretched in terms of workload and expectations, including more involvement in strategy-setting, risk management and operational issues.
 
In general, the respondents say they are coping, but the majority feel they need more training on risk management. They also note that it is more difficult today to set medium-and long-term strategic goals compared with the past. Some best practice lessons: CFOs are using a range of sensitivity scenarios and updating these more frequently, and are enhancing the depth, quality and frequency of communications with staff and external stakeholders, including investors, rating agencies and banks.
