This case study of Cathay Pacific by CIMA details the role of the finance team in climate change projects, which include fuel efficiency projects and airmiles carbon offsets.

Cathay Pacific has aligned itself with the IATA goal of 25% fuel efficiency improvement by 2020 (compared to 2005 levels). In 2008, the airline was responsible for a total of 14.4 million tonnes of CO2 (tCO2) emissions, bringing a total efficiency improvement of 22.5% since 1998.

Establishing better routing in 2008 enabled them to further improve efficiency and fuel savings, and reduce between 0.6 and 0.9 tCO2 per flight on certain routes.
